What is Anesthesiology residency?
It is the training program that train doctors on delivering anesthesia during surgical procedures, caring for critically ill patients in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and managing medical emergencies. The program should provide initial rotations in surgical anesthesia, critical care medicine, and pain medicine. Experience in these rotations emphasize the fundamental aspects of anesthesia, preoperative evaluation and immediate postoperative care of surgical patients, and assessment and treatment of critically ill patients and those with acute and chronic pain. Residents should receive training in the complex technology and equipment associated with these practices.
How many years is anesthesiology residency?
Anesthesiology residency is a 4 years program, the first year spent in a preliminary medicine or transitional year (or as a combo, part of the 4 year categorical program) followed by the 3 year advanced anesthesiology training.

What are the match statistics for anesthesia?
About 70% of positions offered in the match go to AMGs and about 30% of positions go to IMGs. About 95% of AMGs who apply do match and about 45% of IMGs who apply to either categorical or advanced do successfully match , which is considered a very good percentage in this competitive specialty.
What should AMGs do to increase their chances to match in anesthesia?
During your medical school rotations try to schedule your electives mainly in anesthesia to get touch-base with the anesthesia attendings so you will get LORs from them later on. Also you need a book to impress the faculty you are interacting with and increase your knowledge at the same time.
